Let us look at the blurb of Sally the Crab

Sally the Crab by Lauren DragonSally the Crab is a story about a hermit crab who has a really pretty shell that a lot of other crabs admire. However, there is only one crab that Sally calls her true friend, and this crab’s name is Molly. But one day Molly has to move far away. And worst yet, shortly after Molly moves away Sally outgrows her shell. She then begins a search to look for another one. What kind of encounters will Sally come across in her search and just exactly what kind of home will she end up with?

This is a story about friendship and showing what it means to help others out. The illustrations are vibrant, colorful, and pleasing to the eye. There is also some educational value mixed in. Children will learn about various sea creatures, as well as be entertained. The story itself is about a 15-minute read. Fall in love with the characters and enjoy the bonus coloring and drawing pages!

Our Review

Sally the crab is a cute story that follows a little hermit crab named Sally who is trying to seek a new home as she outgrows her beautiful shell striped with delightful colors. As she searches for a new home she is met with some challenges and tries various shells which don’t work quite well until her friend Molly helps her find the perfect home.

What I loved most about the book was how this little crab stayed true to herself and was always kind to everyone she met on her journey to find a new home, even when she could have been frustrated and upset as she wasn’t able to find a home for days. Sally also gifted her beautiful old shell to another crab in need and this gives a wonderful message about being humble and giving. This is a great book for storytime. It also opens up the discussion to talk about why animals need certain characteristics in their homes.

I loved the colorful illustrations! They are stylised and whimsical, and yet they really capture the feeling and the atmosphere, especially the sea anemone and clown fishes, playing on the ocean floor. On each page, you meet a new sea creature such as turtle, Stingray, a sea anemone, clown fishes and a giant octopus. You get to see what they look like and learn some facts about them.

It is a sweet book that will help ease children through the transition, teaches the value of friendship, being kind and hopeful. Beautifully written and portrayed book, great for a gift for children.

Final Verdict

Overall, A really fun children’s book with extremely cute illustrations that looks into the elusive life of the hermit crab. It is a great book for a young child that has or is getting a hermit crab as a pet. I thought it was neat that there is useful information about hermit crab care in the back of the book and includes some coloring pages with beautiful characters from the book to keep your little ones engaged.
