Where Shall We Go?

Where Shall We Go? by Vera HarrisThis is Vera Harris’s third self-published children’s book. Even before I started Happy Reading, self-published in 2014, I’ve always had an interest in becoming a book author. I love creating fun-filled stories that captivate the hearts of little kids, so I worked hard to make my dream a reality.

My first books, A Bee on My Bike (2014) and Zach and His Cat (2015), both appeared in Storymonster.com, a family magazine, and Storytime Pup. They were also featured in Children’s Books Read Aloud on YouTube. I was a part of the Dallas Book Festival 2016, the Houston Texas Black Book Festival, Dallas Public Library Reader’s Fest, and numerous book-signing ventures throughout Dallas-Fort Worth Metro as well. You can take a look at my books at the Dallas Public Library; Ellen Brooks West Memorial Library of Forney in Texas; Houston, Texas Public Library; and the Savannah, Georgia Public Library. I enjoy reading, traveling, and spending time with my family, most of whom fondly call me Sister. Aside from these hobbies, I also love working in the church and being a volunteer reading partner for the Dallas Independent School District. A retired combat Army veteran, I served the U.S. Army with honor and distinction for thirty years. My dedication earned me two Bronze Star medals plus various other commendations, certificates, medals, and honors. Vera Harris, called Sister by her family, loves spending time with her family and working in her church. Her grandson inspired her to write her first book. My books can be purchased at OutskirtsPress.com, Amazon.com, and Barnes & Noble.

Our Review

A cute, short book that will keep the younger children entertained!

Blue or red? Vanilla or strawberry? Movie or book? Children often get stuck trying to decide something because they think every decision is a huge deal. Learning to make their own choices helps children be more independent, responsible, and confident, so decision-making is a good skill to emphasize. While your child won’t become decisive overnight, there’s plenty you can do to help them and one of the best ways is to read a book together to experience stories that will inspire them and teach them lessons on becoming good decision makers. We are so happy to introduce one such book today titled “Where Shall We Go?” By Vera Harris which teaches kids to be confident in their decisions.

In Vera Harris’ Where Shall We Go? Eight-year-old Josie needs to choose where her family will go for their summer vacations and she is indecisive. She is confused and yet to decide if it would be a good idea for them to go to Disney world and see Cinderella’s large, pink, candy-trimmed castle? Or would it be a great idea to go to the zoo to see all kind of animals such as monkey, birds, and elephants? Or on the other hand, would it be more fun to go to the state fair and ride on the fastest, scariest Ferris wheel? Josie is having an extreme time choosing;  however,  she has to compromise in her choices to come to a conclusion.

Where Shall We Go? is a charming story with delightful illustrations that give a good pace and movement to the story. Pictures cover all the necessary details about Josie’s imaginary trip to all the three places she shortlisted for her family vacation and helps kids explore their imagination. It is a Perfect read for parents, teachers and any adult encouraging children to read and learn that they need to make decisions in life, a valuable lesson indeed.

I also LOVE the fact that Vera’s book features a black young female as the main character of her book. As we all know finding good, quality children’s books featuring people of color is hard and the struggle is real so I think having Where Shall We Go? in your kid’s library will expertly diversify their book collection and expose them to a wide range of people, experiences, and cultures.

Final Verdict

I think Vera’s book will allow small children to understand and explore the importance of decision making through a simple and sweet story that demonstrates identifying the decision to be made, thinking of all the options, evaluating the options and choosing the best one. Although the story is too short, it is very well written and wonderfully illustrated that should become a favorite bedtime story – with a lesson. We cannot wait to read the next book from Vera. What about you?
