Some children’s books are designed to answer questions. Did You Ever Wonder Why…? by Dr. Rachel Wheeler does something arguably even more valuable: it encourages children to keep asking them.
Built around a series of simple, child-friendly “why” questions, the book invites young readers to notice the world around them, think about their own experiences, and share what they believe. Children are asked to wonder about everything from why there are so many stars in the sky and why babies cry to why some friends are shy, why trying something new can feel difficult, and why saying goodbye can be harder than saying hello.
What makes this book especially appealing is that it does not rush to provide the “correct” answer. Instead, Wheeler creates opportunities for parents, grandparents, teachers, and children to slow down and talk together.
The book’s “Wonder Together” guide reinforces that idea beautifully. Adults are encouraged to let children think, imagine, and follow one question with another rather than immediately correcting them or supplying an answer. The goal, Wheeler explains, is to help children become careful observers, confident thinkers, thoughtful listeners, imaginative storytellers, and lifelong question-askers.
We especially appreciate how naturally the questions move between curiosity about the physical world and conversations about feelings, bravery, friendship, empathy, and perseverance. A discussion about a shy classmate can become a conversation about helping someone feel welcome. A question about being high on a playground can help a child recognize that something can feel exciting and scary at the same time.
The warm illustrations and recurring young character give the book visual continuity, while the open spaces following the questions invite children to draw their own ideas and responses.
Did You Ever Wonder Why…? is more than a collection of questions. It is an invitation for families and classrooms to wonder together.
And perhaps that is its greatest strength: it reminds us that when a child asks “Why?”, they may not simply be asking for information. They may be inviting us into a conversation.
Reading With Your Kids is delighted to name Did You Ever Wonder Why…? a Certified Great Read.
