Every once in a while, you pick up a middle grade novel that feels like the classic adventure stories many of us grew up loving. Snake Food by Kristin Ann Fulton is one of those books. It has mysterious mansions, secret laboratories, suspicious adults, dangerous reptiles, inventive science, and two resourceful young heroes who discover that courage often grows when life doesn’t go according to plan.
The story begins with fourteen-year-old Olivia Hazelsmith learning that her carefully planned summer is about to disappear. Her physician parents have been called to Africa to help children injured in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake. Instead of ballet lessons, friends, and summer camp, Olivia and her younger brother Theo are sent to stay with their eccentric Great Uncle Austin, an inventor and scientist they barely know.
Things become strange almost immediately.
When Uncle Austin never arrives to meet them at the train station, the siblings find themselves welcomed instead by two unsettling caretakers who claim their uncle has suddenly sailed away after becoming forgetful. Olivia isn’t convinced. Neither is Theo.
Their instincts are right.
Before long, the pair are caught in a mystery involving poisonous snakes, secret formulas, shrinking experiments, hidden laboratories, and villains whose plans become more dangerous with every chapter.
One of the greatest strengths of Snake Food is its wonderful sibling relationship. Olivia and Theo argue, tease each other, and occasionally drive one another crazy—just like real brothers and sisters. Yet when genuine danger appears, they become an outstanding team. Olivia’s love of books, Theo’s courage, and the help of a new friend named Will all prove essential as they race to uncover the truth and rescue Uncle Austin.
Kristin Ann Fulton also deserves credit for celebrating different kinds of intelligence. Reading carefully, solving mathematical problems, making careful observations, and thinking creatively all become heroic qualities. No one character has every answer. Success comes because each child contributes something unique.
That is a message I love sharing with families.
The mystery unfolds at an excellent pace. Every chapter leaves readers wanting just one more. Between the eerie mansion, the serpentarium filled with venomous snakes, secret passages, unusual inventions, and increasingly suspicious behavior from the adults, the tension steadily builds while remaining appropriate for confident middle grade readers.
The book also reminds us that our greatest adventures often begin disguised as disappointments.
Olivia is convinced her summer has been ruined. Instead, she discovers new friendships, hidden strengths, and memories she’ll carry for the rest of her life. That’s a beautiful lesson for young readers who sometimes struggle when life changes unexpectedly.
David Allen Simerley’s black-and-white illustrations add charm throughout the novel, giving the story a timeless adventure feel reminiscent of classic children’s mysteries.
Parents should know that while Snake Food contains genuine suspense, dangerous reptiles, and some frightening situations, the violence is never graphic. The overall tone remains adventurous rather than frightening, making it a strong choice for readers around ages 9 to 13 who enjoy mysteries, science, adventure, and stories featuring capable young heroes.
The manuscript would benefit from one final proofreading pass to address a handful of repeated passages and minor editing inconsistencies. Fortunately, these are small distractions in an otherwise highly entertaining novel and never diminish the creativity or heart of the story.
