About the author
I am a native New Englander born and raised in Maine. I have four sisters and a brother (No sympathy for him please. He was spoiled). Every Sunday we all piled into the family car to visit our grandmothers, aunts, uncles and cousins. My grandmothers were strong independent women who had raised their children to always take care of one another. A lesson passed down to us. We all grew into happy, strong, independent adults thanks to all the love, comfort, support and attention from Mom and Dad.
Life took me to Florida, Alabama, New York, South Carolina, and Illinois. In 2016, I moved to Ridgefield, Connecticut where I work remotely as a project manager for SDI Presence with company headquarters in Chicago, Illinois.
My wonderful son, his amazing wife, and my two exceptional grandchildren live in Virginia. When I am not busy working or writing, I travel to Virginia where I indulge in spoiling my grandchildren (when it’s allowed). They take me on wonderful adventures, teach me important lessons, and provide endless entertainment. I especially look forward to our walks together. It is while on these walks that I soon realize I am wandering into our next marvelous adventure.
Book Review: We’re Going on a Space Adventure by Marie Nichols
We’re Going on a Space Adventure by Marie Nichols is a delightful and imaginative children’s book that combines thrilling space escapades with the warm bond between a boy and his grandmother.
The tale tracks Bracken, a young explorer, and his bold (though quietly apprehensive) Gram as they launch into space. They travel from the Moon to Mars and even Jupiter, with each destination offering new challenges—from grotesque monsters on the moon to hungry Martians and a treacherous asteroid field. Bracken has to find his nerve to control the ship, while Gram overcomes her fear of flight and demonstrates that there are many manifestations of courage.
What sets this tale apart is its heart. It’s not only a story about rockets and planets—it’s a story about having fun together with loved ones, overcoming fears, and believing in yourself when the odds appear against you. Bracken and Gram’s relationship is both engaging and delightful to read, bringing to mind the special adventures grandchildren and grandparents get to share.
Kids will enjoy the action-packed speed of the book, with an added bonus of learning about our solar system through interesting and entertaining planetary facts sprinkled throughout. The combination of thrills and learning makes it a fascinating read for children aspiring to know astronauts or who just love to dream of exploring the stars.
It is also the fascinating illustrations by Penny Webber that make the book really stand out. Her art shines with bright colors, whimsical details, and emotive characters that make the cosmic journey come alive. Every page is like entering a world anew, stimulating imagination and discussion. Webber’s illustrations harmonize beautifully with Nichols’ writing, rendering the reading experience interactive and visually fascinating.
Final Verdict
With lively storytelling and a message of courage and self-belief, We’re Going on a Space Adventure is a wonderful addition to any child’s library—perfect for story time, classroom reading, or sparking conversations about space and imagination.
Recommended for ages 4–8, especially kids who enjoy space adventures and family-centered stories.
