Here’s our book review
“Killer Bread” by Trish Bruno, illustrated by Rachel Novel, is a heartwarming and educational children’s picture book that carries an important environmental message about feeding wildlife responsibly. Through a story filled with lovable characters and gentle lessons, this book makes readers think twice about feeding bread to birds and other animals at the park.
The story follows Mr. and Mrs. Mallard, a friendly duck couple living in a peaceful pond with other animals. They eagerly await visits from people, enjoying the treats they’re given, especially bread. But one day, Mrs. Mallard falls ill. Mr. Mallard takes her to Dr. Hoot, a wise owl who explains that her sickness is due to eating bread, which can impact a duck’s crop—a pouch used to store food before it moves into their stomachs. Bread, Dr. Hoot reveals, can cause serious health issues, sometimes even leading to death.
This revelation alarms Mr. Mallard, who rallies the pond’s animals to educate humans on the dangers of feeding bread to birds. The animals work together to put up a large sign that explains the problem, urging humans to bring healthier snacks like seeds, fruits, and vegetables instead. In a touching part of the story, a young girl convinces a stubborn old man to stop feeding the ducks bread by persistently offering him birdseed, teaching him the importance of protecting wildlife.
The book’s engaging storyline is paired beautifully with vibrant, expressive illustrations that bring Mr. and Mrs. Mallard’s emotions to life, creating a connection with young readers. The illustrations showcase the animals’ teamwork and their interactions with humans, adding warmth and humor to the story.
“Killer Bread” doesn’t just focus on an engaging narrative; it also provides an educational section that explains the problems associated with feeding bread to birds. This includes health risks like poor nutrition, malnutrition-related diseases, and issues like “angel wing,” a condition where a bird’s wing becomes deformed due to a high-carb diet. The book even offers a list of healthier alternatives for feeding ducks and birds, including grapes, oats, and birdseed.
Final Verdict
Bruno’s Killer Bread is a wonderful blend of storytelling and education, making it a perfect addition to any child’s bookshelf. It helps children understand the responsibility we have toward animals, emphasizing that small actions, like choosing the right food for wildlife, can make a big difference.
