Violence in school is something kids deal with regularly, whether it’s kids getting into scuffles or bullying – or worse, school shootings. Parents always want to know how they can teach their children about School safety without instilling fear and yet still get the important message across. Our children need to be heard and spoken to with honesty and empathy. Tina Shepardson has created “WALKOUT” to do just that. Written with empowering child-friendly language, the main character “Maddie” organizes a school walkout to support safe schools but her best friend Stella is unsure about joining the walkout as she fears about the consequence. At the same time, Maddie’s principal has announced that only older grades can participate. In the end, kids learn that they are never too young to stand up for what’s right.
