Book Review: Welcome to My World by Tyron Trotter

Welcome to My World by Tyron Trotter is a heartwarming and insightful children’s book that beautifully weaves together themes of kindness, curiosity, and understanding. Through the eyes of Lauryn and her sister Nabiha, readers are introduced to a world where everyday interactions become opportunities for learning and connection.

The story begins with Lauryn preparing for her day, balancing schoolwork, community service, and a guest speaker visit. The introduction of Lu Samuel, a blind technology instructor, is a standout moment in the book. His explanation of “snapping” as a form of echolocation is both educational and inspiring, offering children a unique perspective on navigating the world without sight. The author does an excellent job of breaking down complex concepts like echolocation and cane travel into simple, relatable terms, making it accessible for young readers.

Another touching moment is Lauryn’s visit to Mr. Charles, where she learns how he identifies canned goods by sound. This scene not only highlights the resourcefulness of individuals with visual impairments but also emphasizes the importance of empathy and helping others.

The book also introduces Kenya and her guide dog, Kyro, teaching children about the role of service animals and the importance of respecting their work. The interactions between Lauryn, Nabiha, and Kenya are filled with warmth and curiosity, showcasing the value of building connections with new neighbors and learning from their experiences.
