Congratulations to Kristen J Anderson!

Lorelei the Lorelei: The First of Many Firsts is our latest certified great read!

Let’s have a look at the book blurb:

Lorelei the Lorelei: The First of Many FirstsSeven-year-old Lorelei doesn’t know what she is more excited about for her upcoming first day of first grade, making a new best friend or finding her “uniquely special thing” that Mee-maw says every child has that makes them stand out. It’s hard to leave her parents, three-year-old brother, and their sasquatch-hunting behind, but after donning the perfect outfit (brightly colored leggings, a tie-dyed tutu, sparkly gold Mary Janes and the perfect headband), she is all bubbly inside with anticipation.

Things at school start off great when Lorelei enters Miss Grim’s room which is as bright and cheery as the teacher herself, and Lorelei is asked by a girl named Adeline to play at recess. Could this be her new best friend? But her optimism is soon darkened by a confrontation with the braggy “superstar” of the classroom, Emily, a.k.a. “Hands,” who always needs to be the center of attention. As the day closes, Lorelei isn’t sure that she’s found this “uniquely special thing,” but she is buoyed by her budding new friendships and all she’s learned about herself.

More about the author:

Kristen AndersonChildren’s author Kristen Anderson has been a storyteller since she was a child, having been encouraged by a special teacher who praised her writing talent after a picture book creation assignment. That enthusiastic support and acknowledgement is something that has stayed with her ever since, fueling her storytelling as an adult. She is now fulfilling her chapter book debut with Lorelei the Lorelei, about a young girl coping with changes and all of the big emotions that come with a new life event.

Kristen writes for pleasure and relaxation, often working on multiple books at a time, with each sentence she writes spawning new ideas. She feels a great book is one whose characters resonate with the reader, evoking emotion. Kristen hopes her young readers come away from her stories having their imagination challenged and understanding that family life can be messy but filled with love and that this stays with them long after the book is closed.

When she isn’t writing poignant stories for children, Kristen enjoys spending time with family, learning piano, and boating. She lives with her husband of thirty-eight years, Jeff, in the Lake Minnetonka area of Minnesota and their beautiful Chiweenie named Rose.

Here’s our book review:

Lorelei the Lorelei: The First of Many Firsts” is an engaging and heartwarming children’s book that beautifully captures the experiences of a seven-year-old girl on her journey of self-discovery. Written by Kristen J Anderson and illustrated by Audrey Suau, this delightful story will resonate with young readers as they relate to Lorelei’s excitement, nervousness, and curiosity about starting first grade.

The story is rich with relatable themes like finding one’s place in the world, making new friends, and dealing with the uncertainty that comes with growing up. Lorelei’s excitement about the first day of school is palpable, especially as she navigates both the joys and challenges that arise, including the playful yet competitive dynamic with the classroom’s “superstar,” Emily. Through these everyday interactions, Anderson shows young readers the importance of embracing one’s uniqueness, a central theme that is both inspiring and empowering.

Lorelei’s relationship with her family, especially her quirky and loving grandparents, adds depth to the story. The inclusion of the light hearted sasquatch-hunting adventure with her dad and brother, and the warmth of her Mee-maw and Bumpa, offer readers a glimpse into Lorelei’s world, which is filled with imagination, love, and support.

Audrey Suau’s illustrations wonderfully complement the narrative. The bright and vibrant images bring the characters to life, especially Lorelei with her colorful outfits and expressive personality. Suau captures the essence of childhood joy and wonder, making the book visually appealing to young readers.

Kristen J Anderson’s writing is both charming and accessible, filled with humor and warmth. She masterfully blends Lorelei’s external experiences with her internal emotional journey, making it easy for children to see their own experiences mirrored in Lorelei’s. The book also touches on important life lessons, such as the value of kindness, friendship, and self-acceptance, all presented in a way that is age-appropriate and engaging.

Final Verdict

Overall, “Lorelei the Lorelei: The First of Many Firsts” is a delightful read for children embarking on new adventures, whether it’s their first day of school or their own personal “firsts.” It’s a story that encourages children to embrace who they are and find confidence in their unique qualities, making it a perfect addition to any child’s bookshelf.
