OUR REVIEW

Tuxedo Baby, written by Victoria Smith and illustrated by Helen Stbakov, is a lovely story that combines adorable penguins, Cherry-Head Conures with a message of adoption, acceptance, and environmentalism. A sweet story for every age child in your life, including adults. We all need that extra encouragement and reminder to love and accept ourselves.

The reader is introduced to a Tuxedo Baby, an orphaned penguin who loses his parents in an oil spill accident. Tuxedo baby now lives in Chile with a colony of Magellanic penguins and they take very good care of him. But something is missing in tuxedo baby’s life. He seeks for warmth and affection of loving parents. Far away in Peru, Mr. and Mrs. Conures, two cherry-headed parrots hear about tuxedo baby’s story. Conures always wanted a baby so they fly from Peru to Chile to pick up tuxedo baby to make him a part of their family. They adopt him and help him grow healthy and strong. Conures teach him how to make his bed, play with toys, and screech loudly. Tuxedo baby can do everything other birds can do except to fly. He tries silly things in an attempt to fly which creates more trouble for him.  But with the help of his kind mother, Tuxedo baby learns to be aware of his limitations and embrace his uniqueness. His parents have another delightful surprise waiting for him that will make him jump with excitement and happiness! Come and join tuxedo baby in his journey to find a loving home!

First of all, the text is delightful to read aloud; the colorful and darling illustrations are perfect for the style and the length of the story is good for elementary-level kids to enjoy the story. Overall, a fun tale with subtle and many valuable life lessons. A wonderful book to help young kids to understand that family is about love no matter how different parents and children may be, adopted or not, about the aftermath of oil spills near penguin habitats and to reinforce the need to prevent oil spills by highlighting their effects on the animals that depend on the oceans. We recommend this book for ages 5 to 7! We rate this book 5 out of 5 stars!
