Our Review

A beautiful book to tell your children about the baby or babies you have lost.

Happy Tears & Rainbow Babies written by Natasha Carlow is a book for young children, ages 2 to 6 years old that helps parents open the lines of communication explaining the term Rainbow Babies and the loss of children through miscarriage, stillbirth or infant loss in a light and childlike way. The birth of a “rainbow babies,” children born after loss, is a complex and emotional journey and a very sensitive topic to discuss with kids.

The author, Natasha Carlow, draws on the true story of her own miscarriage gives us a window into how she and her family experienced the loss. The book begins by introducing readers to a beautiful family of four. A five-year-old Rosie, her little brother, Capi, and their parents. One day, while taking a walk with mommy and daddy at the park, Rosie encounters a beautiful rainbow and points it out to everyone. They are so excited! But Rosie notices her mommy is crying. Daddy and Mommy then explain to Rosie that not all tears are a sign of sadness. They explain in a gentle way the loss of the children they had in their life before Rosei and Capi. Parents held on to the hope and positivity and welcomed Rosie and Capi in their life. They then share how Rosie and Capi are called rainbow babies because it is like a rainbow after a storm: something beautiful after something scary and dark. The illustrators Keevyn Mohammed & Kyle Stephen have an extraordinary gift of capturing feelings in their drawings that tell the story beyond words.

Final Verdict

The term rainbow baby may not be familiar to people who haven’t experienced a loss. But to those who have, it has a very deep and even life-changing significance and there comes a time when parents need to tell their current children or future children about the baby or babies that have died. Happy Tears & Rainbow Babies is a wonderful resource for families and an encouraging way to share such a difficult subject with your children.

If you know someone who has just experienced miscarriage, pregnancy loss, or stillbirth, giving Happy Tears & Rainbow Babies, as a gift will bring much encouragement.
