About the author

Nan ArkwrightNan remembers the moment she decided in third grade that she wanted to work with children. As a pediatric occupational therapist, she gets to do that. In her work, she has learned a lot about meltdowns and tantrums. She wrote this book so kids and parents could share a story about big feelings they both can relate to and to help children who feel that stopping when asked, accepting “no” for an answer, and doing something they don’t want to do is just “too much”. In therapy, using the hero’s journey concept from the book, she helps children understand their own journey and how to become agents of positive change for themselves. Be inspired to encourage the child in your life by going to Instagram (missioncontrolthe book) to see examples of ways she has led children to accomplish their missions, just like Joseph in the story did! 🚀

Nan has added value with her Parent Power Packs that dive deeper into the main themes in the book, model responses parents can strive to emulate, share research-based parenting information, and teach values to children in an entertaining way. HERE’S OUR REVIEW

Mission: CONTROL! A Big Feelings Adventure is an uplifting children’s picture book suitable for ages 4 – 10. It is written by Mom’s Choice Award-Winner Nan Arkwright, and beautifully illustrated by Joe Bauman.

The story follows a little boy named Joseph who is busy watching TV with his pet dog Gretchen. Joseph loves watching his favorite superhero show titled Spaceman Sam. But when it’s bedtime his mom tells him to switch off the TV and go to bed. Upon hearing this, Joseph fumes with anger. He doesn’t wants to stop watching the TV and miss out on all the fun. Just when his big feeling takes over him completely,  his kind mother advises him to follow his favorite spaceman Sam’s Mantra(Feel It, Say It, Calm It, Solve It) to solve the problem. Joseph then escapes to Planet Kelvin 273 to fight the Green HypnoZoids and to save himself from their hypnotizing powers. Will Joseph and Gretchen accomplish the mission and return to their home base just in time for bed? Grab your copy to find out!

Kudos to Nan Arkwright for creating a wonderful book to help young children learn to identify emotions, the situations that spark these feelings and effective coping skills provides them with a strong emotional foundation, which in turn can lead to increased self confidence and sense of self esteem. If your child loves superheroes and is fascinated by their action-packed adventures, then they’ll enjoy reading Nan Arkwright’s exciting picture book. Featuring the cutest little superhero and colorful illustrations, this book will appeal to the littlest readers.

This is a GREAT read for kids who experience very big feelings. Mission: CONTROL! A Big Feelings Adventure is an important read for ANYONE with emotions! But on a more serious note, Nan Arkwright offers a way to explain the expression of emotions in a healthy, creative way that all children will understand and potentially, find great peace in. Emotions can be so jarring for littles, and this book offers a fresh perspective to validate and put purpose to those emotions. Nan Arkwright’s words are so very thoughtful, and Joe’s illustrations are the perfect accompaniment. A must-have for any home or school library.

Final Verdict

We enjoy books about bedtime challenges that are reassuring and provide a sense of security for young children. This does that with ease. Awesome book! A beautiful book that describes a range of emotions and how they make you feel physically, with simple language that children will relate to.
