RWYK Author Interview: Jennifer Vitanzo on “Santiago: True Tales of a Little Bug in a Big World”
Happy Friday everyone!
Today we’re overjoyed to have Jennifer Vitanzo on the Reading with Your Kids podcast!
Cat is joining to talk about her newly released book Santiago: True Tales of a Little Bug in a Big World, a special short story that captures a wild praying mantis named Santiago and his many unusual adventures across South Africa with his adoptive family.
Listen in as Jennifer discusses her book, her career as an author/photographer, music, bugs, traveling, family and just about everything on the earth. We’re happy to present this episode and Jennifer’s story and hope that you enjoy them as much as we enjoyed bringing them to you!
Here’s Some Information About Jennifer Vitanzo
Jennifer Vitanzo spent nearly a decade working in wildlife conservation on various South African game reserves. An aspiring Jane Goodall, she has lent her storytelling talents as a writer, photographer, and social media maven to various NGOs, game lodges, conservationists, and environmental causes. On a few occasions, she also lent her body as bait for wildlife research. Before dropping herself in the South African bush, this NJ native and Georgetown graduate lived in Los Angeles, where she pursued a career as a singer/songwriter while simultaneously moonlighting as a photojournalist covering a variety of topics for various media outlets. This is her second foray into children’s books, her first being a series about a family of lint balls, written
when she was in 8th grade. She clearly gravitates to offbeat subject matter.

Meet Santiago… as he explores a whole new world!
The life of a newly hatched praying mantis takes an unexpected turn when he hitches a ride on a flower and ends up in a human’s kitchen. Now faced with surviving in an unknown land, he must learn to navigate the challenges of vacuums, dust bunnies, stovetops, and, most confusing of all, human beings. How will he survive in such an alien world?
This is the true story of a wild praying mantis named Santiago and his many unusual adventures across South Africa with his adoptive family—two adult humans, three stuffed animals, a rotating cast of mantis‑sitters, and (for a short time, at least) a pigeon. All told from the mantis’s perspective, of course.
