The Adventures of Anna Atom

Author Interview with Elizabeth Wasserman

Today, we have a special guest at Reading with your kids podcast: Elizabeth wasserman. Elizabeth is the author of her latest released children’s book The Adventures of Anna Atom. She was born in Klersdorp, 1964. She grew up in a tiny village called Koppies, in the middle of the Free State, in South Africa. As a child Elizabeth wanted to become a writer, but decided that it was best to first get something to write about. She started off by studying medicine at Free State University, and later specialised in Medical Microbiology at Stellenbosch University. She loves to learn and to teach. These days she is a pathologist in private practise and an extraordinary professor in Medical Microbiology at Stellenbosch University.

Elizabeth is very interested in science and nature, and believes that one has to understand how everything fits together in order to treat our ecosystem, and each other, with care and respect. She lives with her husband, daughter and Dogtective William in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town.

The amazing Adventures of Anna Atom takes you to a tiny island adrift in the Indian Ocean, just south of the Equator. This is the home of the precarious Atom family: professor Sabatina Atom, a scientist working for United Surveillance (US), her adventurous young daughter Anna, and Anna’s strange little brother Pip. Pip is half human, half biotron . . . and every bit as annoying as younger brothers can be! Anna finds a pirate’s dagger on her usual afternoon swim. This prompts her to start investigating the mysterious sunken treasure of the Chivonne. But Anna’s father’s scheming colleague tries to shift the magnetic poles of the Earth. Are his motives above suspicion? Anna becomes tangled in these complicated adult matters.

A growing girl needs her father. Max, the supercomputer working with her mother on the island, and Ton, a man with a mysterious past, have their work cut out to keep Anna from getting into all kinds of trouble. Throw in a couple of pirates, a sea monster, some dodo’s and an evil scientist, and you have all the ingredients for a super story!

In this episode, Elizabeth discusses her latest release: The Adventures of Anna Atom & tells us her stories are filled with loads of action and adventure. She also talks about the benefits and importance to reading to young children & her love for science and technology. She believes that learning should be fun and that science is the most powerful form of magicBe sure to listen to listen & enjoy!
