Reading With Your Kids Special Episode ft. Karla Butler

Welcome to yet another fun-filled episode of the Reading with Your Kids Podcast! Today we’re excited and eager to talk to Karla Butler, Zookeeper turned Children’s Book Author and ACO and a lifelong Wildlife Educator. Karla is joining us to share with us her first children’s book Noah Zarkadinkydoo.

Noah Zarkadinkydoo is a fantastic book for kids who loves animals & reptiles and also for the kids out there that need some reassurance about snakes and other reptiles!

We’re so grateful to Karla for digging deep about her writing, her inspiration for this book, some interesting and well researched facts about reptiles and for being so open and honest. There’s a lot of real talk here, along with lots of laughs. Take a listen, and you’ll hear why!

Here’s more information about Karla Butler

Karla ButlerIf there was anything Karla Butler was certain about, even as a kid, it was that she wanted to work with animals when she grew up. Perhaps she would be a veterinarian or a marine biologist. After many visits to my favorite places (the zoos and aquariums I would later gain experience in), she decided that she wanted to be an animal trainer.

Karla was accepted into the Exotic Animal Training and Management program at Moorpark College. In the next two years, she learned about animal training, zoo keeping and wildlife education. She also learned how vast the field of “working with animals” was. She had the opportunity to intern at the LA Zoo, the Santa Barbara Zoo, Sea World, and the San Diego Zoo. After graduation, it was time to look for her first zoo-keeping job.

Meanwhile, Karla’s children were quickly taking after her in their love and fascination of animals. They spent her days off walking around work. She loved sharing everything she knew about the animals, and they loved learning about them. As writing has always been one of her hobbies, she also began to write in her spare time. During a random web-surfing session, she came across an ad for a sports blogger. Football just happens to be another love of hers, so she submitted an article. She wrote for this syndicated blog for about a year. She enjoyed it immensely, but there was a lot of research involved and it was very time consuming. It occurred to her that writers write what they know. She might love to watch football, but what she “know” is animals.

One cross country move and a few more adventures later, Noah Zarkadinkydoo was published. Karla writes to share as much as she can about the wild world with the next generation, as well as those of us entrusted with their care. As for continuing her work with animals, She’s on a whole new adventure!
