Our Review

The Love of the Irish: Why We Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in America by Jaimie Hope is a beautifully illustrated look at the life of St. Patrick, and the history, legends, and traditions associated with March 17th. It is a factual book presented in an entertaining way. What an incredible way to teach history to children!

St. Patrick’s Day is here and Ashlyn and Brendan are going to discover why do people celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in America? However they aren’t very excited about it. But that doesn’t prevent their grandfather from showing them the importance behind this holiday and it’s traditions as they begin their celebrations of the day by attending a mass at church, attending the parade and then meeting their father for a special dinner. At the end of the story kids discover pride for their inheritance and realize that St. Patrick’s Day means plenty of music, dancing, and feasting fun!

It is a very informative book on the Irish holiday. Before I read this book I knew very little about St. Patrick’s Day. As I was reading this book, my favorite part was learning about the history of the holiday. The only thing I knew prior to reading this book is people wear green and leprechauns have something to do with it. This would be an excellent book to include into a classroom during the holiday to understand different cultures.

You can learn so much from reading this book. According to tradition, St. Patrick chased Ireland’s snakes into the sea however this book explains that St. Patrick had nothing to do with driving snakes out of Ireland. What he really did was bring Christianity to the island and we celebrate it on March 17th because Saint Patrick died on that day in 461 so it is celebrated, by honoring his accomplishment and attending Mass.”. I also learned that St. Patrick’s Day parades started in New York in 1762 and it represents the military, the police department, schools, and many other Irish societies in New York.

Final Verdict

Overall, it’s a great book to introduce young kids about how the Irish actually celebrate St Patrick’s Day and to learn about their customs, culture and traditions. With wonderful illustrations and a sweet story, it can be a great addition to your St. Patrick’s Day, especially since books for this holiday are hard to find!
