Our Review

Tony the Theatre Dog written by Glen C. Kinnaird and illustrated by Livvy Porrill is a children’s picture book series that begins with Kinnaird’s first book, “Puttin on a Show.” The author and playwright, Glen C. Kinnaird was inspired to write this book after he adopted an eight-week-old puppy (rescued from a puppy mill) in the fall of 2008 and named him Tony.

In this charming tale, Glen Kinnaird has beautifully depicted his love for the theatre by teaching kids about how the theatre works by using his dog Tony as the main character. It gives readers insights into a lot of work that goes into creating a theatre performance. Tony the Theatre Dog takes readers on a backstage tour and introduces them to many different specialized people that complete all of the tasks required before the actors can even step foot on stage. Tony walks readers through inner workings of the stage and explains so many aspects of preparing for the show that includes stage management, costumes, lighting, and production, In the book, Tony and his other dog friends overcome a conflict with a group of cats, with the help of some friendly mice, all while learning about what goes into making a theatre production work. The group then puts on a show together.

Tony the theatre Dog will help young kids experience the world of theatre through a simple yet engaging story with gorgeous illustrations.  Dog lovers will love hanging out with Tony to meet the actors as they prepare and watching the action from backstage. Being among the hustle and bustle of a group of people getting ready for performance is just as magical as being on stage. Even if your child has never had the privilege of “treading the boards” or “watching from the wings” he or she will want to jump right in after reading Tony the Theatre Dog.

A crucial part of a live performance happens behind the scenes so if you aren’t taking your kids to the theatre, Tony the Theatre Dog will reinforce the magic of the stage. There are a lot of different items in the book to look at and talk about, different colors, and a lot of different topics. The message of putting our disagreements aside to work together as a team is great too! Overall, We just love the personality in this book and think it’s adorable!
